Kate de Pury

Kate is an award-winning news editor and journalist with extensive international experience, specialising in Russia, Ukraine and the region. She was Moscow Bureau Chief for the Associated Press between 2014 2019 and covered the start of Russia’s invasion of east Ukraine. Before this, she worked for Reuters, covering post-Soviet conflicts in Chechnya, Georgia, Nagorno-Karabakh and unrest in Belarus.

She currently heads the European Broadcasting Union’s Moscow Bureau and manages the daily news file from Russia, ensuring staff and freelancers can report safely in an environment which is openly hostile to public service journalism. She writes for the Economist’s 1843 long-form outlet and led an EBU monitoring project on Russian state media coverage of the first months of the Ukraine war.
