Safety training for freelancers in N. Ireland

The Rory Peck Trust is offering five fully-funded spaces for freelance journalists to attend a one-day safety course at Ulster University on Friday 21st May.

We know that safety training is vitally important for freelance journalists – and this course, held by Ulster University, will help you gain the skills and knowledge you need to stay safe while on the job.

The full-day session, to take place on Friday 21st May, will focus on civil disturbance safety ahead of this year’s marching season. Training will include situational awareness, dynamic risk assessment, mental health resilience, personal safety, emergency first aid, source handling, communicating with police and the law on terrorism.

To register, simply email your biography (max. 250 words) to training@rorypecktrust.org by the deadline of MONDAY 17TH MAY. Please include how long you’ve been a freelance journalist, which media outlets you work for, what kind of reporting you specialise in, links to recent work and details of any previous safety training or HEFAT course you’ve completed. No CVs please.
