Freelance Assistance

The Freelance Assistance Programme is at the heart of our work, providing direct financial and practical support to freelance newsgatherers and their families globally.

We work with a wide network of international and local partners. These partnerships enable us to reach freelancers in countries where it is difficult to operate and to provide additional support where needed. The Programme operates in four main ways:

  • ASSISTANCE GRANTS provide financial assistance to freelance newsgatherers in crisis, and to those who have been seriously injured or are suffering persecution, exile or imprisonment as a result of their work. They also support the families of those who have lost their lives.
  • RORY PECK TRAINING BURSARIES make hostile environment training affordable for freelancers, enabling them to gain the skills and knowledge needed to work in difficult and dangerous environments
  • REGION-SPECIFIC PROJECTS run in collaboration with local and international partners protect and educate freelancers in practical ways that are specific to their needs.
  • ONGOING PRACTICAL ADVICE AND INFORMATION for freelancers and their families – a unique and essential source of guidance, support and referral. This includes our online digital resource pages
