Pilgrims Group offers a Hostile Environment Course that consists of an 8-hour e-learning package followed by an intense two day practical training course. This allows participants to conduct the first stage of training at their own convenience, which may be useful for freelancers who are acting on a tight timeframe.
The two day practical training course is roughly split 60/40 between outdoor/practical content and indoor class confirmation. Medical training forms an important part of both the practical and classroom based theory, and all delegates are trained in the application of both trauma bandage and Combat Applied Tourniquet (CAT).
Aside from medical training, the course covers seven other key modules, including pre-deployment planning, personal safety, vehicle safety and conflict management. The practical training course is run from Redhill, in Surrey, UK. Successful delegates receive a certificate and a qualification that lasts for a period of up to three years. Each course is tailored to meeting the risks faced in a particular country/region.

'We work with freelancers to develop an understanding and knowledge of how to employ mitigating measures to reduce exposure to risk, allowing freelancers to respond appropriately when confronted with a dangerous situation, manage incidents and to maximise control over developing situations.
We have recently introduced more training time to further enhance our conflict management and disengagement skills, sexual violence and harassment as well as gender and cultural issues; (all run sensitively by our female team where appropriate). We also now include more time on psychological trauma spread throughout the course. We ensure that all course participants can navigate checkpoints, deal with aggressive interviewing and confidently know that their information is secure.
Our 3-day course is aimed at those working in medium intensity environments (post conflict, natural disaster situation or where there is a moderate threat of terrorism, a high crime rate and civil unrest may be present. Our 5-day course ensures that they can work safely in high Intensity environments, where there may be ongoing conflict or war or where investigative journalists face a clear threat from the State or criminal syndicates.
All course participants receive a Level 2 in Emergency First Aid at Work (valid for 3 years), a waterproof aide memoire, trauma bandage and other takeaway equipment.'
