Launched in 2017 by the Rory Peck Trust and Frontline Freelance Register, safety surgeries are one-to-one consultations for freelance journalists.
In partnership with the Frontline Freelance Register, the Rory Peck Trust ran two full days of Freelance Safety Consultations at ARIJ on 23-24 November. These sessions with Arabic-speaking safety experts were free of charge and open to freelance journalists in the region, working across all platforms.
The tailored private consultations focused on physical safety issues, including risk assessment and assignment planning, covering topics ranging from navigating checkpoints to packing appropriate kit for assignments.
New York City 2019.
The Rory Peck Trust and Frontline Freelance Register were invited to deliver their safety surgeries as part of Photoville. This freelance safety clinic was an opportunity for freelance photojournalists and documentary photographers to receive free, expert, one-to-one advice on safety, risk assessment, digital security, and trauma management.
“It is great to bring the Safety Clinics to the US and impressive to see how they are evolving – contributing to the growing culture of increased awareness of safety and adapting to the changing environment in terms of freelancer safety. The increased involvement and buy-in of news organisations marks an important step forward.”
