Rory Peck Trust Training Opportunity Safe Reporting on Home Ground: Managing Physical & Online Risk.

One-Day Safety Training for Freelancers

Taking place in Belfast Metropolitan College (Belfast Met) on Thursday 1st October 2026.

Designed specifically for freelance journalists working without newsroom backstops, this practical, one-day workshop adapts core Hostile Environment and First Aid Training (HEFAT) principles for domestic reporting. Learn how to navigate physical risks in public spaces—such as protests, rallies, and doorstep reporting—alongside digital threats like doxxing, harassment, and online targeting.

Through scenario-led, interactive sessions led by experts —with input on legal context and escalation pathways from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI)—you will leave with actionable frameworks to assess risk, stay safe in the field, and protect your digital presence.

  • Date: October 1, 2026 (Full Day)
  • Location: Belfast Metropolitan College (Belfast Met)
  • Format: In-person, practical workshop
  • Note: Detailed schedule and room location will be shared with successful applicants prior to the event.

This course is led by local, veteran journalist Leona O’Neill.

This opportunity is open to UK-based freelance journalists with at least 12 months of experience. Participants will be expected to take part in hands-on exercises and should bring comfortable clothing. All safety gear will be provided, and the training will follow a ‘do no harm’ approach.
