Why It Matters

We rely on freelance journalists to gather the facts we rely on to make key decisions. Freelancers are often the first on the ground when a story breaks, and the last to leave.

Around the world, threats to journalists – and to journalism – are increasing dramatically: in scale, severity and complexity, creating increasing pressure on and vulnerability for those who seek to expose injustice and uncover corruption. And it is freelance journalists who often face the most danger, as they have the fewest resources to protect themselves.

The past 15 months have been the deadliest period for journalism since the Committee to Protect Journalists began keeping records. The number of journalists jailed stands at its second highest total ever while a record number of media have been forced to flee their homes, displaced by conflict, climate change and those who seek to silence them.

When a country’s journalists are silenced, its people are too. We put freelancers at the centre of our work, not simply for their sake – as important as that is – but to safeguard the freedom of everyone. The independent journalism they produce gives us the facts we need to make key decisions. By protecting freelancers and the independent journalism they produce, we protect freedom and we protect democracy.

No mission could matter more.
