China – United States Journalists Exchange

The All-China Journalists Association, the Better Hong Kong Foundation and the East-West Center jointly launched the first China-United States Journalists Exchange in 2010 to increase and deepen public understanding of the two countries and their relationship. The programme offers opportunities for six to seven Chinese journalists to travel to the United States and six to seven US journalists to travel to China.
Hubert Humphrey Fellowship

The Hubert Humphrey Fellowship is a 10-month programme based in the United States that awards about 150 fellowships each year. Fellows undergo academic studies at one of 13 host universities, along with professional experience related to their field of interest. Preferred applicants are journalists and communications professionals with at least five years of experience outside of the United States, leadership qualities and proficient English skills.
Arthur F. Burns Fellowship

United States, Canada, Germany
The Arthur F. Burns Fellowship offers journalists from the United States, Canada and Germany the opportunity to report from and travel to each other’s countries to share knowledge and professional expertise. The programme is open to American, Canadian and German journalists between the age of 21-40 and applicants should have two years of professional, full-time journalism experience.
Dag Hammarskjold Fund for Journalists

Africa, Asia, Latin America, Caribbean
This fellowship programme is open to journalists from mainly developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean who have a commitment to international affairs and conveying a better understanding of the United Nations to their audience. Fellowships are available to radio, TV, print and online journalists aged 25 to 35 who are interested in coming to New York to report on international affairs during a session of the UN General Assembly. Fellowships run from early September to late November and cover travel, accommodation and a daily allowance in New York.
Rosalyn Carter Fellowship for Mental Health Journalism

Mental illnesses constitute some of the most serious, unrecognised and under-reported health problems in the United States and around the world. As part of an international effort to reduce stigma and discrimination, the Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism provide stipends to journalists to report on topics related to mental health or mental illnesses.
Daniel Pearl Fellowship

Middle East, South Asia
The Daniel Pearl Foundation and Alfred Friendly Press Partners have partnered since 2003 to provide fellowships to journalists from South Asia and the Middle East to work in American newsrooms and experience the dynamics of a free press environment first-hand. The fellowship programme begins in March with a two-week orientation seminar in Washington, DC designed to prepare the fellows personally and professionally for the challenges of living and working in the US.
Alfred Friendly Press Partners Fellowship

Developing countries
This six-month Fellowship is open to journalists from developing countries. Fellows will spend six months at the Missouri School of Journalism to study, and will also have a staff position in a newsroom. It is targeted at early-career journalists with at least three years of experience and proficiency in English.
The German-Latin American Fellowship

Germany, Latin America
Since 1997, the German-Latin American Fellowship of IJP has offered young journalists the unique opportunity to spend two months in a Spanish-, Portuguese- or German-speaking media outlet. At least five young talented German and six Latin-American journalists get the chance to discover the diversity of their host countries.
Abe Fellowship for Journalists

United States, Japan
This Fellowship is designed to encourage in-depth coverage of topics of pressing concern to the United States and Japan through individual short-term policy-related projects. The AFJ competition is open to citizens of the USA and Japan with at least five years of professional journalistic experience with newspapers, news magazines, wire services and online news organisations.
TRACE Investigative Reporting Fellowship

This fellowship, in partnership with Alfred Friendly, is focused on journalism that exposes business-related bribery and financial crime. TRACE sponsors fellows with an interest in investigative reporting to work in American newsrooms. Applicants should be proficient in English.
Jefferson Fellowship

United States, Asia and the Pacific Islands
The Jefferson Fellowship is the East-West Center’s most widely-recognised and established seminar programme, offering print and broadcast journalists from the USA, Asia and the Pacific Islands an opportunity to gain on-the-ground perspectives and build international networks to enhance their reporting through an intensive one-week education and dialogue seminar at the East-West Center in Honolulu. Training is followed by a two-week reporting tour in the Asia Pacific-US region.
