In September 2019, the Rory Peck Trust and ACOS Alliance supported a four-day course in personal safety, first aid, legal issues and digital security for Cambodian freelance journalists. The training was funded by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy.

“Most freelancers in Cambodia work independently. We face a lot of problems, especially when we go to the field or the province, when we cover strikes or protests. The training was very useful for us. Before this, we didn’t know how to protect ourselves. When we go to the forest or when we cover protests, sometimes we don’t know where to stand, where to hide from a bullet, or the rocks that the protesters throw. I’ve learned a lot in this training. We now know how to react when we see something unsafe.”

In August 2019, the Rory Peck Trust partnered with the Justice for Journalists Foundation to deliver a five-day safety training course developed for Russian-speaking media professionals coming from Russia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Belarus, Armenia and Uzbekistan. The course was supported by local partner Human Rights House Tbilisi.

“I really liked that we were given practical skills on how to work in a hostile environment, which is very current for Russian journalists. We were trained on digital security and given very good advice on dealing with stress and trauma in our profession.”
