The Rory Peck Trust supported nearly 600 freelancers from over 40 different countries in 2024. Nearly half of those aided by the Crisis Fund and the Therapy Fund were from a single region—the Middle East and North Africa. 195 freelancers participated in both in-person and virtual training courses organised by the Trust worldwide.
Writing in the introduction to the report, Rory Peck’s Executive Director, Jon Williams, says it shows how donor support “has made a difference during a perilous time for journalism”. The Trust’s work is 100% funded by contributions from partners and supporters. 2024 was the deadliest year on record for journalism–a third of all those killed were freelancers.
Williams says that the Trust’s impact extends beyond those it directly assists: “Support for Rory Peck helps safeguard the independent journalism we all depend on to make informed decisions, ensuring accountability and enabling justice”. And in a message to donors, he writes ” on behalf of the Trust—and the freelancers whose work you empower—thank you.”
