The Rory Peck Awards are uniquely dedicated to the work of freelance cameramen and women in news and current affairs worldwide. These are the freelance videojournalists, filmmakers and news camera operators who contribute so much to today’s international newsgathering and to our understanding of the world. Established in 1995, the Rory Peck Awards showcase their work and demonstrate why they deserve recognition and support.

Entries are invited in the following three categories:

Rory Peck Award for News, sponsored by Google

Honours the work of freelance cameramen and camerawomen in the coverage of one news event where the focus is on the immediacy of the story. (Duration: up to 10 minutes)

Rory Peck Award for News Features

This award honours the work of freelance cameramen and camerawomen in news features that look beyond the immediacy of the news. (Duration: up to 20 minutes)

Sony Impact Award for Current Affairs

This award honours the work of freelance cameramen and camerawomen in long-form current affairs examining a single issue, story or situation that has an impact on the viewer, policy or public awareness. (Duration: up to 60 minutes)

Across all categories, the awards recognise quality of camerawork, and also take into account individual endeavour and journalistic integrity.

  • All entries must have broadcast between 1 June 2018 and 31 May 2019 inclusive.
  • The Rory Peck Awards welcome self-funded work and entries from freelancers living and working in regions where it may be difficult to operate
