Jon Williams announced as
Executive Director of
the Rory Peck Trust

The Trustees of the Rory Peck Trust have appointed Jon Williams as its new Director. Jon, former Managing Director of RTÉ News and Current Affairs, will join the Trust in mid-April. He succeeds Clothilde Redfern who leaves the organisation after 5 years.

Commenting on the new appointment, Tira Shubart, Chair of the Board of Trustees says, “I am delighted to welcome Jon as our new Executive Director. He has been a supporter of the Trust for many years and his belief in the wellbeing of journalists and media freedom has been a core value in his career. Jon will bring his profound depth of knowledge and experience in the news world to the Trust.”

Jon spent more than a decade leading global coverage on both sides of the Atlantic. As foreign editor, first of the BBC, then in New York at the US network ABC, he led the reporting of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, winning an International Emmy for the BBC’s Middle East reporting and two further Emmys for the coverage of the Syrian Civil War and of the resulting refugee crisis. From 2017-2022, he was the Managing Director of RTÉ News, leading the digital transformation of Ireland’s public broadcaster. Jon also serves on the board of The Committee to Protect Journalists.

Jon Williams says, “Wherever I’ve been in the past two decades, from Iraq, to Afghanistan, Syria and Gaza, the Rory Peck Trust has been supporting those on the frontlines of the fight for media freedom. Freelance journalists hold the powerful to account, exposing injustice while risking everything to bring us the news. Without the truthtellers, we would have no media freedom. That’s why after more than 30 years in journalism, it is such an honour to join the Trust. Values and purpose matter. Tragically, the Trust’s vital work is needed now, more than ever. I’m looking forward to working with the great Rory Peck team to help and support those fighting for our media freedom.”
