This fellowship, run in cooperation with the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the International Media Center, aims to foster international understanding between China and Germany by providing 16 fellows from the respective countries with a three-month programme of work and study in their opposite countries. All fellows receive a monthly stipend of €1,350. It includes a two-month fellowship in a local newsroom. Broadcast, print, online and radio journalists are eligible to apply.


Arthur F. Burns Fellowship

Country/Region Applicable: U.S..., Canada and Germany.

The Arthur F. Burns Fellowship offers journalists from the United States, Canada and Germany the opportunity to report from and travel to each other’s countries and to share knowledge and professional expertise. Each year one fellow is selected each year for a journalism prize amounting to €2,000. The fellowship includes a two-week language training session before travelling to the host country.


China - United States Journalists Exchange

Coordinated by the East-West Center, this program offers a small number of American and Chinese journalists to embark upon reporting trips in each others’ countries in order to further and increase reporting from both nations. Although it’s not expressedly for freelancers, it’s a good potential opportunity for you to develop story ideas in new surroundings at low cost. 


Dag Hammarskjold Fund for Journalists

Country/Region Applicable: Africa, Asia, Latin America, Caribbean

This fellowship sets out with a really specific purpose - to improve reporting from the 'developing world' on the United Nations General Assembly which begins every September in New York. Although the fund is based with the UN, it's financially completely independent and is looking to give independent journalists between the ages of 25 -35 the opportunity to provide their country with objective and impartial reporting on the workings of the United Nations. Watch out for the next round of applications - and don't be put off by the information on their website - applications from freelancers are warmly encouraged. 


Daniel Pearl Fellowship

Country/Region Applicable: North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia

Run by the Daniel Pearl Foundation and Alfred Friendly Press Partners,, this fellowship offers the opportunity for journalists from South Asia and the Middle East to work in U.S... newsrooms. The programme covers all programme-related costs, including international and domestic U.S... travel, insurance and basic living expenses. Eligible applicants must have a minimum of three years’ professional journalistic experience, have early to mid-career status and be between 25-35 years old, and a good command of both written and spoken English. 


The German-Latin American Fellowship

Country/Region Applicable: Germany/Latin America.

This fellowship, run by the Internationale-Journalisten Programme, offers young journalists the opportunity to spend two months working in Spanish, Portuguese or German-speaking media. The aim of the project is to increase South American coverage in the German media. Fellows receive a total of €3,300, which is expected to cover travel, accommodation and food. Journalists from Germany and South America between the ages of 25-35 are eligible to apply. Spanish and German language skills are essential.  


Bill Maynes Fellowship

Launched in 2008, the Bill Maynes fellowship has invited journalists and other civil society leaders to the US to build their skills and professional networks by connecting them with their American counterparts. Jefferson Fellowship

Country/Region Applicable: U.S.. and “Asia Pacific”.

The Jefferson Fellowship offers journalists from the U.S.. and Asia Pacific an opportunity to broaden their understanding of Asia Pacific issues and build a professional network through a 3-week programme of ‘dialogue and travel’. Five years of professional experience is preferred, and the fellowship covers travel, accommodation and food. Successful applicants are expected to pay a $650 programme fee that covers other programme expenses.
