Sebastian Meyer Thuraya sponsorship

Award-winning photographer and multi-media journalist, Sebastian Meyer, is the recipient of a unique sponsorship set up by Thuraya Telecommunications Company in partnership with the Rory Peck Trust.

Sebastian, who is based in Erbil, Iraq, will receive a Thuraya IP+ broadband terminal plus a package of free airtime to support his work. It will enable him to file image and video, keep connected and stay safe in difficult and remote regions.

"Safety and security are of the utmost importance for freelance journalists today.", said Tina Carr, Director of the Trust. "We are delighted to partner with Thuraya to provide mobile satellite connectivity to Sebastian and Metrography, to help him stay connected and deliver important stories from the region."

Thuraya's sponsorship will also benefit the work of Metrography, Iraq's first photo agency, set up by Sebastian and Kamara Najm Ibrahim in 2009 to develop, support and promote the work of Iraqi freelance photographers.

"Infrastructure here in Iraq is in terrible shape", Sebastian told RPT, "with electricity cuts part of our daily life. For reporters and photographers who need to file their work on time, this can be a serious problem, as communication lines often fail.

"Thuraya's IP+ terminal will be a significant help in delivering stories from corners of the country which are often cut off from electricity and the internet".
