James Foley killed

We are horrified and deeply saddened at the news of freelance journalist James Foley's death yesterday.

James was a talented journalist and an exceptional human being. Tina Carr, director of Rory Peck Trust said: "We are all totally devastated. We had worked with James and helped him when he was searching for other missing journalists. This is what we had dreaded. Our thoughts are with his family and friends."

Jim's mother, Diane Foley released this message today: "We have never been prouder of our son Jim. He gave his life trying to expose the world to the suffering of the Syrian people."

"We implore the kidnappers to spare the lives of the remaining hostages. Like Jim, they are innocents. They have no control over American government policy in Iraq, Syria or anywhere in the world," she wrote. "We thank Jim for all the joy he gave us. He was an extraordinary son, brother, journalist and person. Please respect our privacy in the days ahead as we mourn and cherish Jim."
