London, UK, Thursday 10th February 2011 - The Rory Peck Trust today announced that Michael Jermey, ITV’s Director of News, Current Affairs and Sport, has become its new Chairman. He takes over from Adrian Wells, who moved to the Middle East to launch Sky News Arabia.

Michael brings with him more than 20 years experience in international news and broadcasting, and has held senior roles at ITV and the news company ITN. He is a former editor of News at Ten, and Managing Director of ITN International. As ITN’s Head of Foreign News, Michael led the organisation’s international newsgathering during the 1990’s, including its award-winning coverage of world events such as the war in Bosnia and the Rwandan genocide. In his current role at ITV Michael has overall responsibility for all of the network’s national and regional news, current affairs and sports output.  He has been a Trustee of the Rory Peck Trust since 2002.

“Adrian did an excellent job as Chairman of the Trust and he’ll be greatly missed”, said Michael Jermey.  “The Trust is the only charity whose goal is to provide assistance and protection for freelancers and their families in need.  The work freelancers do is of vital importance to the news media and to fully informed democracies around the world.  I look forward to working with colleagues to ensure that the great work of the Rory Peck Trust continues and deepens over the years ahead.”

Tina Carr, Director of the Rory Peck Trust, added: “Over the past two years, under Adrian Wells' chairmanship, the Trust has become a more robust organisation, re-engaging with the freelance community and forging stronger links with international newsgathering organisations.

Since Michael joined the board in 2002, he has played a significant role in the Trust’s continued development. With his experience of international newsgathering at a senior level, and his commitment to the work of the Trust, I can think of no-one better to take us forward in our vital work with freelancers. I very much look forward to working with him.”
