Apply Now: Spring safety and trauma workshop for Ukrainian freelance journalists

Applications are now open for our five-day safety and trauma workshop for Ukrainian freelance journalists.

The workshop will run from WEDNESDAY 18 APRIL to SUNDAY 22 APRIL 2018 in Kyiv and is available to freelance journalists living and working in Ukraine, who hold Ukrainian citizenship and are available to travel to Kyiv for the duration of the course. 
The workshop is intended for freelance journalists, photographers and videojournalists who have experience of covering the Maidan protests, the Eastern Ukraine conflict and/or the situation in Crimea. Alternatively, applicants may have worked on sensitive or traumatic issues within Ukraine.
Successful applicants will receive training from world-leading experts on:
  • Trauma, Self-Care and Responsible Journalism
    Angelina Fusco is an independent training consultant who spent over 30 years working for BBC Northern Ireland - 15 years as Head of TV News. She has also worked as a senior trainer at BBC College of Journalism and in countries including Turkey, Georgia and Ukraine. 
    Jana Javakhishvili is a clinical psychologist who has worked in trauma research, training and treatment – including in the field of conflict transformation for peace-building processes in Georgia and the South Caucasus. She has worked regularly in Ukraine since 2014.
  • Risk Assessment
    Chris Cobb-Smith is a media safety and security advisor. He has worked on security and logistics in conflict zones worldwide, joining the BBC in 2000. He now advises senior media management on safety/security policy and training.
  • Digital Security
    Maksym Lunochkin has worked as an IT specialist at the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union for over eight years. In 2016 Maksym completed The ISC Project ToT. He is the co-founder of Digital Security Lab Ukraine.

This is the second workshop forming part of a project funded by the United Nations Democracy Fund and in partnership with Ukraine’s Institute of Mass Information. The two-year project aims to support Ukrainian freelance journalists by providing them with the skills to work safely and professionally.
Please note all applicants must be able to commit to attending the five-day workshop from 18-22 April 2018. Travel costs will be reimbursed, and accommodation and meals will be provided for the workshop’s duration.
