The Rory Peck Trust and Frontline Freelance Register have organised another successful day of safety surgeries for freelance journalists working around the world.

The event, which took place on March 1st, gathered six of the UK’s leading security experts at London’s Frontline Club. Advisors from organisations including 1st Option Safety, A. Kain & Partners, AKE, BuzzfeedTYR and HP Risk Management spent the day providing free, one-to-one security guidance to 40 freelancers on general safety issues, risk assessment, assignment planning and digital security, both in person and via Signal.

Their advice was aimed at giving freelancers who are working, or planning to work, in hostile environments access to knowledge and expertise that will help them improve their safety and risk assessment skills. It is the second event of its kind and was fully booked within a matter of days.

1st Option Safety’s Chris Lawton, who was behind the original idea for the surgeries, said: “It’s a real privilege for advisors like me to be involved in this event. There was a high level of focussed professionalism from all of the freelancers who took part. They had a realistic and developed appraisal of risk alongside a real belief that their work is worth doing. I’m looking forward to seeing how their projects develop.”

Catalina Cortés, Senior Programme Officer for Safety and the Americas, said: “These safety surgeries are not intended to replace formal Hostile Environment Training, but they do provide freelancers with direct access to safety and security advisors that they cannot get elsewhere. They also help freelancers realise the importance of proper safety training, and I’ve been delighted to see that several of the day’s participants have already applied for our safety training bursaries.  We are now looking ahead to see when and where we can hold the next event!”
