NYC Photojournalism Auction to raise money for children of Anton Hammerl

NYC Photojournalism Auction to raise money for children of Anton Hammerl

On Tuesday May 15th, Christie's New York will hold their first-ever auction of contemporary photojournalism to raise money for the children of freelance photographer Anton Hammerl, who was killed in Libya in April 2011.

The auction is being organised by friends and colleagues of Anton's ( including freelancers Clare Morgana Gillis and James Foley who were captured and detained by Gaddafi soldiers for six weeks the day Anton was killed. Anton left behind his wife Penny and three young children: Aurora, 11; Neo, 8; and Hiro, now one year old.

The auction includes signed prints by some of the world’s leading photographers, including Sebastiao Salgado, Alec Soth, Christopher Anderson, Ed Kashi, Yuri Kozyrev, Larry Fink, Kenneth Jarecke, Lynsey Addario, Susan Meiselas, Ron Haviv, David Burnett, Joao Silva, Bruce Davidson, Greg Marinovich, Samuel Aranda, Roger Ballen and Vincent Laforet.

Freelance photographer and co-organiser David Brabyn commented:

“Our immediate goal is to support the long term security of Anton’s 3 young children. Our wider goal is to highlight the importance of photojournalism as a source of information for readers and viewers worldwide and the risk photojournalists – particularly freelancers – take to fulfill it.

Not everyone realizes what it takes to get news images to the pages of magazines and websites. If, in addition to all that, we can help grow the space for photojournalism in the art market even a little we would be delighted.”

NYC-based photography collector Alan L. Paris has called the auction "a milestone in contemporary photojournalism" but it will appeal to a range of potential buyers, from fine art collectors to people who would simply like to make a humanitarian contribution and purchase a wonderful image at the same time.

The Rory Peck Trust is proud to be an official supporter of the auction and we urge you to support it too - by attending the event and/or making a donation.
