World Press Freedom Day 2013

As World Press Freedom day is celebrated around the world, let's remember the huge contribution that freelancers make to newsgathering and the reporting of world events.

Increasingly, the Trust is working with local and international partners on projects that help freelancers work safely and develop their skills in ways that are accessible and affordable. In April 2013, we partnered with the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma to run a 2-day trauma workshop for freelancers covering the conflict in Syria.

The Trust is supporting 26 year old freelance journalist and blogger Nguyen Hoang Vi and her family in Vietnam. She has been harassed, beaten, threatened after reporting on scandals involving government officials.
Nguyuen is just one of the many freelancers who are receiving financial help through our Freelance Assistance Programme.

We recently teamed up with Thuraya Telecommunications Company on a new sponsorship initiiative. Sebastian Meyer, a freelance photographer and multimedia journalist based in Iraq, is the recipient of a Thuraya IP+ broadband terminal and airtime package that will help him develop his work, and the work of Iraq-based photo agency Metrography. Sebastian will be blogging regularly for Thuraya throughout the year.

This year's Rory Peck Awards, sponsored by Sony, are now Open for Entries in News, Features and Impact categories. So enter now and spread the word among friends and colleagues. The closing date is Monday 3 June 2013.
