“It's something which I have lovingly grown for almost two years now, but shaving it is a tiny sacrifice in comparison to the sacrifice many freelance journalists make”.

Neal Mann is the Multimedia Innovations Editor at the Wall Street Journal. He is shaving his (rather long!) beard off to raise money for the Rory Peck Trust. He is aiming to raise $10,000 for the Rory Peck Training Fund, which provides essential safety training bursaries for freelancers working in hostile environments.

Sydney-based Neal, who was previously Digital News Editor for Sky News in London, says he hopes that his fundraising will help freelance journalists get the essential training they need, and help “stop a freelance journalist somewhere making the ultimate sacrifice.”

“The recent events in the Middle East have highlighted the great risks freelance journalists, photographers and cameraman take while doing their jobs", said Neal. "Covering situations like those in Iraq and Syria takes courage, experience, but also training. Due to the expense of hostile environment courses many freelance journalists go into conflict zones with little or no preparation in the scenarios they may encounter or the medical experience they may need if it goes wrong on the battlefield.”

The Rory Peck Training Fund provides bursaries so that freelancers can afford this essential safety training.  All monies raised by Neal will go directly to the Rory Peck Training Fund.

The more money Neal raises, the more bursaries we can provide....
