Climb and Conquer: the Cooks' mountain challenge for RPT

TYR's Steve Cook and his 17 year old daughter Riana will be tackling Scotland's Original Mountain Marathon in October to raise money for the Trust.

Lasting two days and set across 420km of remote Scottish wilderness, the Original Mountain Marathon (OMM) will test Steve and Riana's fitness, mental endurance, teamwork and navigation skills.

With just six weeks to go, the pair are well into their training: a combination of track and cross-country runs, hiking and circuits. But the right planning and preparation will also be crucial.

As a safety and security professional, Steve trains journalists for work in hostile environments, so he's used to this level of planning: "In many ways it's the same sort of preparation journalists need to do before going on assignment," he says. "The location and terrain, what clothing to take, our food and water supply, how and where we'll sleep at night - we'll need to plan all of this way before we head to the hills."

Steve chose to take on the OMM challenge to raise money for our work with freelance journalists: “RPT is an organisation totally committed to the safety of freelancers all over the world, who are typically more vulnerable than staffers. Whether it’s providing grants towards their safety training or financial support during times of crisis, their work is vital to the news industry. I will always do what I can to support them."

Nevertheless, not every 17 year old girl would give up her weekends to go running over hills with her dad. So what persuaded her? "Ballet. I promised I'd go to Riana's ballet classes as part of our training. That's the deal." That may prove to be Steve's toughest test.
