Training Fund

Safety training is vitally important for freelance journalists planning to work in hostile environments. The Rory Peck Training Fund makes Hostile Environment and First Aid Training courses affordable to freelancers.

About the fund.

The Rory Peck Training Fund enables freelance journalists to gain the essential skills and knowledge needed to work in difficult and potentially dangerous situations. Launched in 2000, the Training Fund has given hundreds of bursaries to freelance journalists, photographers, camera operators and filmmakers to allow them to take part in a training course with one of our trusted course providers. Courses teach them to assess risk and spot danger, handle a crisis, support others and give vital first aid.

Who can apply?

To qualify, you will need to have worked as a freelancer in newsgathering and/or current affairs for a minimum of 18 months. The number of bursaries are limited and priority is given to freelancers whose work frequently takes them into hostile environments, and to those with a confirmed assignment.

How can I apply?

To apply for a Rory Peck Training Fund bursary, you must complete a Training Fund Application Form and send it with an up-to-date CV and application letter telling us why you’re applying. You will also need to include the contact details of two referees who can endorse your application and vouch for your work as a freelancer.

How long does it take to process an application?

On receipt of your application form and supporting documents, it can take between one and three weeks to approve a bursary. To speed up the process, we recommend that you advise your referees that they will be contacted by the Trust.

Which course provider should I choose?

The Trust works with six course providers. You must take your training with one of them, but it is up to you which one. We recommend researching the courses of each training provider before deciding which one is right for you.

Things you may want to consider include:

  • course dates
  • location
  • price (some providers reduce their rates for Rory Peck bursary recipients, others offer specially-discounted courses at different times of the year)
  • course content and delivery

Please note bursaries are limited and given on a case-by-case basis.
